This project was named after ‘Uhuru Peak’ on Mt Kilimanjaro, Uhuru is Swahili for ‘Freedom’. Our mission is to support these communities, who give so much to us on all our trekking adventures.
We’re passionate about supporting local communities & women’s empowerment projects. It’s a small project that makes a big difference in the lives of the local people. Any women who join our Wanderlust Women’s Adventures have the opportunity to visit the local village and see where we’re making a difference.
What We Do
We support women and families in the local village of Marangu in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro, supplying pigs, chickens, grain and building materials. Many of our mountain crew who work with us live in this village. This is our way of contributing to their families and supporting them to live a more sustainable lifestyle. With high unemployment, 68% live below the poverty line. Each trip we go back to see their progress and spend time with the families. Pigs and chickens change lives & create a better future.
Stage 3 of our project sponsors schooling, university, and other educational opportunities for our trekking porters & families.
Education is the key to escape the poverty cycle!
How you can help
- 2 pigs & grain – $100
- 5 chickens and grain – $25
- Women’s Menstrual kit – $15
- School fee – $400
- Build a house – $1000

Days for Girls (DFG) is a global project supporting young girls & women to have access to quality, safe and sustainable feminine hygiene. We support women with health education and washable re-usable menstrual kits. These kits give the women dignity and help them to stay in school, receiving a full education. All the kits we distribute are hand-made by volunteers in our local community in Australia. Wanderlust Womens Adventures has supported the implementation of a Masai women’s sewing enterprise producing the kits on a local level in the Maasai heartland of Tanzania. They’ve received sewing machines, materials and training to help get this project established. Together as a collective, we’re creating a world where all women have dignity, health, and sustainable menstrual solutions.
“Travelling with Wanderlust Women’s Adventures is traveling with a purpose, helping at the local level, meeting real people and connecting in a way that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. The whole trip was amazing, confronting and exciting, its an adventure like no other! Thank you Cate & Wanderlust! Alison.K,“
